I haven’t seen or heard the chicks since leaving them near Snipe Meadow 4 days ago. I hadn’t seen either take a fish by that point and they may not have survived. It’s estimated that less than half of kingfisher chicks live beyond the first week after they leave the nest. That’s the worst case scenario, and it could be that the parents have driven them out of the territory and one or both are fending for themselves. I hate to think that anything has happened to those beautiful young birds after all the work put in by the patents but it’s a possibility. Definitely something to get one thinking about the whole business of mortality!
On a more positive note though, there were calls near the nest again for the first time today. I waited and saw a bird fly into the hole. It didn’t come out again for the next 20 mins so it should be laying or sitting. All being well there will be chicks again by mid/late July.
