Greater Spotted Woodpecker opposite Snipe Meadow this morning, one of those lucky situations. It stayed more or less still as I slowly advanced. I originally spotted it about 70 yards away and I got to within 40 feet in the end, advancing a few paces then stopping each time.
It could be a youngster, though the last fledging will have been in mid-July. That might explain too why it let me get so close – young birds tend to be more trusting, though they need to grow out of that pretty soon if they’re going to survive.
