I barely made it through the floods along the river bank this morning.
The snowmelt and rains are still pouring downstream from the Northamptonshire catchment – but it was worth it!
I watched this female kingfisher for about twenty minutes. She was spending a few minutes at a time on different perches, sometimes unusually close to the surface and sometimes well back from the river’s edge to peer into the flooded puddles where the path would normally be. Fishing is difficult in the muddy water. She only dived twice in the time I was there and didn’t catch anything.
Coming back through Cotterstock wood a kestrel whizzed past at head height in an effortless high speed slalom through the trees.
