A kingfisher just below Cotterstock lock this morning. It was on a short stretch I’d always thought had good perches but where I’d never seen one before. There’s been much more activity in the last few days, including some territorial display from another bird high in a tree upstream of here. It’s still hard to spot them in the foliage though – luckily this one turned and I caught the flash of its back feathers. It fished a few times, returning to perches close by, then flew across the river and made a beautiful arc upwards over the high bank and down again to disappear along the mill race.
