At last I’m beginning to see blue and brown argus butterflies along the river bank. Blues are tricky to follow as they flit amongst the greenery. They are tiny and fast, the light blue wings are hard to see and they also change direction unpredictably. It’s a very good test for the eyesight which can leave your eyeballs wobbling in their sockets.
For me the most attractive part of both species is their underwings. It’s hard to imagine that they haven’t been hand painted by a skilled and inspired artist. There are similarities between them, and in the overall layout and size of their wings. I wonder if they are closely related?
