There was a lot of bellringing from St Peter’s church this afternoon so I walked there to investigate. Glad I did. A group of bellringers had travelled from London and Bristol amongst other places to ring as many bells in as many churches as possible.
This was by no means their first church of the day, and they’d just finished a quarter peal when I arrived – 50 minutes of different permutations of 8 bells. The full menu of changes would take 3 hours! They did a final 5 minutes to what they called “put the bells to bed”, which means leaving the bells in the up position.
Then they staggered downstairs, mostly people of a certain age, with sweat patches on their shirts and hair all over the place, looking like they didn’t know what had hit them. Apparently those bells are very heavy. Bloody magnificent what people do for fun!
