I saw the same chick by the dead tree again, though it was while before it came out into the open. It made some more sophisticated attempts to fish, but had no success while I was there. There was a white patch low down on its right wing when it was closed. It looked like a feather had been damaged – possibly torn out? – and part of the under feather was showing. This didn’t seem to affect its flight, but I guess small percentages may be telling in the fight for survival. It will be interesting to see if it turns up again with this distinguishing feature though maybe a new feather will grow in its place?
There was no sign of an adult bird. Although this is the time when feeding should have stopped I would have thought the next stage would be behaviour aimed at driving the chick away. I’d be surprised to see much more of it here.
